They are tracked for search volume, and selecting the right ones—especially long-tail keywords—can significantly impact your site's ranking potential.
How do I find good keywords for my site?
Utilize tools like Ahrefs, Spyfu, or Google's keyword planner to identify relevant keywords tailored to your site's niche, especially when conducting an SEO Audit Checklist. Ensure the chosen keywords align with your site's overall theme and have a manageable difficulty score, factoring in your Domain Authority (DA) to gauge ranking feasibility.
You should choose a keyword that is:- Relevant to your site overall
- Has a low difficulty score (this depends on your DA)
- Has an interesting monthly search volume. For sites with a low DA, you might only be able to target keywords with no more than 200 - 1000 monthly searches.
Do not:
- Have more than 1 primary keyword per page/blog post.
- Have the same primary keyword twice on your website to avoid keyword cannibalization.
- Ever create content for your site without doing keyword research first! (unless you do not want to rank on Google)

Include plenty of these related keywords in your main content and headers. It's like sending good vibes to Google, letting it know what your page is all about.
If you start confusing Google with mixed signals and it can't figure out your page, your ranking might take a nosedive.
If you want you can use ChatGPT or other tools to create a large list of words that should be included in your content.
For example, Spyfu provides a list of related keywords and questions you can incorporate into your page. Alternatively, you can analyze your competition and identify the keywords they rank for.
Another method is to search your primary keyword on Google and examine either the "People also ask" section or the "Related searches" section. (Google explicitly suggests what to include.)
One frequently overlooked yet crucial step in the process is conducting competition research. It involves understanding how other pages are structured and assessing the likelihood of securing a top-ranking position, possibly even claiming the number one spot among the top 10.
The primary takeaway from competition research is to understand the essential elements required for your page to be comparable or superior to your competitors. This involves analyzing the visual and content aspects that contribute to creating a more effective page.
Include in your research:- Minimum page word count
- Content focus and key questions to address
- Effectively addressing search intent – can it be improved?
- Finding a unique perspective distinct from competitors
- Consideration of incorporating a video
- Assessment of the need for substantial visuals
- Realistic evaluation of competition with high Domain Authority sites
- Backlink analysis of top-performing competitors
- Review of social media engagement on competitor content
- Exploration of potential featured snippets or rich snippets opportunities

In essence, this involves understanding the reason users visit your page and ensuring that their intent is fulfilled. By aligning your content with user expectations, you convey positive signals to Google and enhance user satisfaction, potentially leading to increased sharing, more sales or recurrent visits.
User intents can be broadly categorized into four groups, although at times, they can be simplified into two primary categories: informational or commercial.
The 4 user intents are:- Informational Intent: Users seek information or answers to their queries.
- Navigational Intent: Users aim to navigate to a specific website or page.
- Transactional Intent: Users intend to perform an online transaction, such as making a purchase.
- Commercial Investigation Intent: Users are in the research phase before making a transaction, comparing products or services.
One important ranking factor is the number of words in your post or page. Google uses this to identify keywords and assess your page's quality.
Generally, Google views pages with more words as higher quality and tends to rank them higher. The general guideline is to aim for pages with over 2000 words. However, it's advisable to determine the minimum keyword count based on individual keywords, considering this during competition research.
Also, keep in mind that word count alone doesn't guarantee a higher rank. If you fill your content with fluff or include too many spelling errors, Google might actually decrease your ranking.
Hence, aim for the ideal word count, emphasizing well-crafted and high-quality content that provides value to the visitor.
To achieve success with your SEO efforts, you need effective tools. Fortunately, many tools are free and easy to use. Here is a list of tools you should consider:
Yoast SEO WordPress Plugin: Yoast is a powerful SEO tool that assists with sitemaps, robots.txt, and overall on-page SEO.
Detailed SEO Chrome Extension: An excellent tool for analyzing your pages and your competition. It provides information such as word count, noindex, alt text, internal and external links, and more. This is one of my most frequently used and popular tools.
MozBar Chrome Extension: A valuable tool for competitive research, especially for finding Domain Authority, Page Authority, and the number of backlinks your competition has.
SEOquake Chrome Extension: A great tool for on-page SEO analysis. It provides points for improvement and, importantly, has a "KEYWORD DENSITY" section that details how well you've used your primary keyword and related keywords.
ChatGPT: ChatGPT and other AI tools are helpful for SEO. They can offer keyword suggestions, optimize headers, analyze and spell-check your text, among other tasks.
Google Search Console: My top SEO tool for analyzing success. It displays indexed pages, identifies issues, shows impressions and clicks. It also allows manual inspection of each URL and lets you request an index of your pages. It's probably one of the best SEO tools available and a must-use tool if you want to measure and optimize your SEO success.
Step Two - On Page SEO Audit Checklist
Ensure your page has only one H1 header. Having a single H1 header helps maintain clarity and coherence in signaling the main topic of your page to search engines. It allows Google to better understand the primary focus, improving the overall SEO performance of your content. Additionally, a singular H1 header enhances the user experience by providing a clear and concise indication of the page's main subject matter.
For optimal SEO results, it's best to ensure that your primary keyword is present in the H1 and the first paragraph, which should be above the fold when the page first loads.
"Above the fold" refers to the content that is visible without scrolling. Placing the H1 and the initial paragraph in this prominent position ensures immediate visibility to both users and search engines, signaling the page's relevance and improving its chances of ranking well. This strategic placement contributes to a positive user experience and reinforces the importance of your chosen keywords for search engine crawlers.
Google prefers short slugs (URL paths). Therefore, the only element in the slug should be your primary keyword. This sends positive signals to Google and ensures clarity about the page's content.

Alt text is a brief description added to an image in the HTML code, providing alternative information for those who cannot view the image. It serves as a crucial accessibility feature, assisting users with visual impairments in understanding the content of the image.
It's also a great way to add more relevancy to your page and explain in more detail what the page is about, which helps with SEO because search engines rely on alt text to comprehend the content of images. Ensure to incorporate your primary keyword or related keywords within your alt text. However, avoid being overly promotional and strive for a natural integration.
Create a short meta description using your main keyword. Check the length with tools like Yoast SEO and Detailed SEO Extension – aim for about 160 characters. A good meta description is brief but gives people a quick idea of what your content is about when they see it on a search engine.
You can use ChatGPT to create an SEO meta description. Just paste your text and ask ChatGPT to make a short meta description with your main keyword. If it's too long, ask ChatGPT to make it shorter until it fits. Easy!
Ensuring a well-organized and clear structure for your page is crucial for Google to grasp its content easily. Incorporating your main keyword or relevant keywords into your H2 and H3 headers reinforces the message to Google about the page's topic.
Remember to integrate the primary and related keywords in a natural and organic manner. Avoid spammy or awkward placements that might seem unnatural. A seamless and authentic inclusion of keywords contributes positively to both user experience and search engine understanding.
Consider what Google values, like efficiently navigating websites and delivering valuable content to its users (remember, people visiting your site are essentially Google users).

Therefore a smart strategy is to include external links, as this aligns with Google's preferences and enhances the overall usefulness of your content.
Adding internal links within your website is really important for SEO. It's not just about helping Google crawl your site faster; it's like giving a thumbs-up to each page, showing Google which ones are more important. When you link pages together, it helps Google move around your site easily and shows which pages matter most.
This not only makes Google happy but also makes it easier for people to explore your website. Just keep the words in your links simple and clear so everyone understands what they're about.
When crafting internal links, it's crucial to link within the current page and from other pages to enhance user navigation. Additionally, it benefits you by incorporating relevant keywords and increasing your word count without resorting to spammy practices or keyword stuffing. This is especially crucial when optimizing your content for an SEO Audit Checklist.
FAQ stands for "Frequently Asked Questions." It's a list of common questions and answers about a topic. Just like positioning your primary keyword in the H1, it's beneficial to include it in the opening paragraph, ideally within the first sentence located just below the H1. This practice enhances the visibility and relevance of your keyword early on, contributing to improved search engine optimization (SEO) for your content.
Embedding social buttons on your site is advantageous for SEO because it encourages social engagement and sharing. When visitors share your content on social media platforms through these buttons, it increases your content's visibility and reach.
Search engines consider social signals, such as likes, shares, and comments, as indicators of content quality and relevance. The more your content is shared, the more likely it is to be seen and valued by search engines, potentially leading to improved search rankings.
Social buttons can, therefore, contribute to a broader online presence and positively impact your website's SEO performance.
Try to avoid intrusive banner pop-ups that show up right away after the user enters your site, especially those that cover the entire page, especially on mobile. Google values user experience, and having annoying banners is often a no-no for visitors. Thus, Google would prefer pages that are more user-friendly to be ranked higher.

Using pictures or images that make sense with your content helps people understand and enjoy what they're reading. This makes the website more pleasant for them. Also, search engines like Google pay attention to these pictures. When the pictures match the words on your page, it tells the search engine that your content is relevant and helpful. So, using the right pictures not only makes your website nicer for visitors but also helps it show up better in search results.
If you've marked off the initial checkboxes on the list, you're likely aware of the crucial role your primary keyword plays. Therefore, I emphasize once more: aim to include your primary keyword naturally and consistently throughout your content. Ensure it appears at the beginning, middle, and end of your text, and don't forget to incorporate it into your closing paragraph.
Using schema markup for rich snippets is essential for SEO because it provides search engines with structured information about your content. This additional data helps search engines better understand the context and details of your web pages, enabling them to present more informative and visually appealing snippets in the search results.
Rich snippets stand out on the search page with additional information like star ratings, product prices, publication dates, and more. By incorporating schema markup, you enhance the chances of your content being displayed in a more prominent and enticing way. This not only attracts more clicks from users but also signals to search engines that your content is well-organized and relevant, potentially improving your overall search engine rankings.
Generally, the more internal links you add to your page, the better. Internal linking is crucial for SEO as it helps Google crawl your page faster and more efficiently. It also sends positive signals to Google, indicating which pages are more important.
Try to incorporate as many valuable and useful links in your footer as possible. This may include links to your contact page, subscribe page, and essentially your entire navigation. Additionally, consider linking to popular posts or useful content.
Simply observe what other pages are doing to get an idea of what you can include in your footer. Avoid spamming and ensure that the footer is easy to read.
Generally, it's advisable to refrain from adding external links in your footer, as Google might perceive this as spam. While I don't include any external links in my footer, I promote Bluehost (as I genuinely like it) by creating an internal link first and redirecting it to Bluehost.
To ensure that all your efforts are not in vain, you must confirm that the page you are attempting to rank is allowed to be indexed.
Sometimes pages have a Noindex tag attached to them, There can be various reasons why a page might have a NoIndex tag.
Generally, all pages are set to be indexed, but it's wise to use a tool like the Details SEO extension to check whether or not a page has a NoIndex tag.
Below are the most common reasons why your page might have a 'Noindex' tag.
Meta Tag: The page contains a <meta name="robots" content="noindex">
tag.
Solution: Remove or update the meta tag to <meta name="robots" content="index, follow">
if you want the page to be indexed.
CMS Settings: Content Management System (CMS) settings may be configured to set certain pages as noindex.
Solution: Check the CMS settings and update the indexing settings for the page.

DoFollow backlinks allow search engines to follow the link and pass on link equity, contributing to the linked page's authority and influencing its search rankings.
On the other hand, NoFollow backlinks instruct search engines not to follow the link, and they don't transfer link equity. While DoFollow links are valuable for SEO, NoFollow links can still be beneficial for referral traffic and brand exposure. Should I spam my links all over the web?
No, it's not a good idea to randomly share your links everywhere. While getting some links from unusual places might help a bit, it's not very effective. Trust me, I've tried it. Plus, it might backfire because Google checks if your links look like spam. If they do, Google thinks they're not important, and your website might not rank as high.
Should I buy backlinks?Generally speaking, No!, especially not from weird sources promising hundreds or thousands of quality backlinks for just 5 dollars. It doesn't work that way. If you want a link on a big site like Forbes.com for example, it can cost much more, maybe between 50 and 200 dollars for just one link.
Most importantly, avoid buying links from suspicious sources. They might create spammy links that don't help your website. In fact, Google could penalize your site for having too many spammy backlinks.
How to track and analyze my backlinks?
